December 30: National Resolution Planning Day: -- Today we're getting a headstart on setting goals for next year! Spanning 12 days, the 'rebirth of the natural world' would be celebrated by the Babylonians. A new king would be crowned, crops would be planted, and promises would be made to the gods. They believed that if these promises or resolutions were kept and fulfilled, the gods would be happy instead of vengeful. In 153 B.C., to honor the god Janus, January 1 was declared as the start of the new year by the Roman Senate. Janus was an entity with two faces who had the ability to look backward and forward in time - this symbolized the end of one year and the beginning of another. But it wasn't until 100 years later, in 46 B.C., that the concept of the new year being on January 1 was made official and effective by Julius Caesar. Just like the Babylonians, the Romans would pledge promises to their god Janus about their behavior for the coming year. During the Middle Ages, the 'Peacock Vow' would be renewed at the end of each year. Essentially, these were resolutions that knights committed to in order to uphold the code of knighthood. Knights would place their hands on a cooked peacock and renew their oaths to protecting honor and chivalry. December 30, 1803: The History Of The United States: The Territorial Expansion of the United States (The Territorial Evolution of the United States): The Louisiana Purchase: -- The United States takes formal possession of the territory of Louisiana. The Louisiana Purchase was a land deal between the United States and France, in which the U.S. acquired approximately 827,000 square miles of land west of the Mississippi River for 15M USD. In April 1802 President Thomas Jefferson received reports that Spain would retrocede to France the vast territory of Louisiana. As the United States had expanded westward, navigation of the Mississippi River and access to the port of New Orleans had become critical to American commerce, so this transfer of authority was cause for concern. Jefferson wrote U.S. Minister to France Robert Livingston: "every eye in the US. is now fixed on this affair of Louisiana. perhaps nothing since the revolutionary war has produced more uneasy sensations through the body of the nation." The presence of Spain was not so provocative. A conflict over navigation of the Mississippi had been resolved in 1795 with a treaty in which Spain recognized the United States' right to use the river and to deposit goods in New Orleans for transfer to oceangoing vessels. In his letter to Livingston, Jefferson wrote, "Spain might have retained [New Orleans] quietly for years. her pacific dispositions, her feeble state, would induce her to increase our facilities there, so that her possession of the place would be hardly felt by us." He went on to speculate that "it would not perhaps be very long before some circumstance might arise which might make the cession of it to us the price of something of more worth to her." Jefferson's vision of thus obtaining territory from Spain was changed by the prospect of having the much more powerful France of Napoleon Bonaparte as a next-door neighbor. France had surrendered its North American possessions at the end of the French And Indian War. New Orleans and Louisiana west of the Mississippi were transferred to Spain in 1762, and French territories east of the Mississippi, including Canada, were ceded to Britain the next year. But Napoleon, who took power in 1799, aimed to restore France's presence on the continent. The Louisiana situation reached a crisis point in October 1802 when Spain's King Charles IV signed a decree transferring the territory to France and the Spanish agent in New Orleans, acting on orders from the Spanish court, revoked Americans' access to the port's warehouses. These moves prompted outrage in the United States. While Jefferson and Secretary Of State James Madison worked to resolve the issue through diplomatic channels, some factions in the West and the opposition Federalist Party called for war, and even advocated secession from the Union by the western territories in order to seize control of the lower Mississippi and New Orleans themselves if the Union would not do so themselves. Aware that the need for visible action was more important than diplomatic maneuvering, and concerned with the threat of disunion, Jefferson in January 1803 recommended that James Monroe join Livingston in Paris as minister extraordinary to Napoleon's France. Later that same month, Jefferson asked Congress to fund an expedition that would cross the Louisiana territory, regardless of who controlled it, and proceed on to the Pacific, an expedition that became known as the Lewis And Clark Expedition. Monroe was a close personal friend and political ally of Jefferson's, but he also owned land in Kentucky and had spoken openly for the rights of the western territories. Jefferson urged Monroe to accept the posting, saying he possessed "the unlimited confidence of the administration & of the Western people", and "all eyes, all hopes, are now fixed on you, .... for on the event of this mission depends the future destinies of this republic." Shortly thereafter, Jefferson wrote to Kentucky's governor, James Garrard, to inform him of Monroe's appointment and to assure him that Monroe was empowered to enter into "such arrangements as may effectually secure our rights and interest in the Mississipi, and in the country Eastward of that." As Jefferson noted in that letter, Monroe's charge was to obtain land east of the Mississippi. Monroe's instructions, drawn up by Madison and approved by Jefferson, allocated up to 10M USD for the purchase of New Orleans and all or part of the Floridas. If this bid failed, Monroe was instructed to try to purchase just New Orleans, or, at the very least, secure U.S. access to the Mississippi and the port. But when Monroe reached Paris on April 12, 1803, he learned from Livingston that a very different offer was on the table. Napoleon's plans to re-establish France in the New World were unraveling. The French army sent to suppress a rebellion by slaves and free blacks in the sugar-rich colony of Saint Domingue (present-day Haiti) had been decimated by yellow fever, and a new war with Britain seemed inevitable. France's minister of finance, Francois de Barbe-Marbois, who had always doubted Louisiana's worth, counseled Napoleon that Louisiana would be less valuable without Saint Domingue and, in the event of war, the territory would likely be taken by the British from Canada. France could not afford to send forces to occupy the entire Mississippi Valley, so why not abandon the idea of empire in America and sell the territory to the United States? Napoleon agreed. On April 11, Foreign Minister Charles Maurice de Talleyrand told Livingston that France was willing to sell all of Louisiana. Livingston informed Monroe upon his arrival the next day. Seizing on what Jefferson later called "a fugitive occurrence," Monroe and Livingston immediately entered into negotiations and on April 30 reached an agreement that exceeded their authority - the purchase of the Louisiana territory, including New Orleans, for 15M USD. The acquisition of approximately 827,000 square miles would double the size of the United States. Though rumors of the purchase preceded notification from Monroe and Livingston, their message reached Washington in time for an official announcement on July 4, 1803. The purchase treaty had to be ratified by the end of October, which gave Jefferson and his Cabinet time to deliberate the issues of boundaries and constitutionality. Exact boundaries would have to be negotiated with Spain and England and so would not be set for several years, and Jefferson's Cabinet members argued that the constitutional amendment he proposed was not necessary. As time for ratification of the purchase treaty grew short, Jefferson accepted his Cabinet's counsel. The Senate ratified the treaty on October 20 by a vote of 24 to 7. Spain, upset by the sale but without the military power to block it, formally returned Louisiana to France on November 30. France officially transferred the territory to the Americans on December 20, and the United States took formal possession on December 30. December 30, 1865: #BOTD: #HBD! Rudyard Kipling, English journalist, short-story writer, poet, novelist, Free Mason and Nobel Prize laureate (d. January 18, 1936) is #born Joseph Rudyard Kipling in Bombay, India, a place which inspired much of his work. Kipling's works of fiction include The Jungle Book (1894), Kim (1901), and many short stories, including "The Man Who Would Be King" (1888). His poems include "Mandalay" (1890), "Gunga Din" (1890), "The Gods of the Copybook Headings" (1919), "The White Man's Burden" (1899), and "If-" (1910). He is seen as an innovator in the art of the short story. His children's books are classics; one critic noted "a versatile and luminous narrative gift". Kipling in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was among the United Kingdom's most popular writers. Henry James said, "Kipling strikes me personally as the most complete man of genius, as distinct from fine intelligence, that I have ever known." In 1907, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, as the first English-language writer to receive the prize, and at 41, its youngest recipient to date. He was also sounded for the British Poet Laureateship and several times for a knighthood, but declined both. Following his death in 1936, his ashes were interred at Poets' Corner, part of the South Transept of Westminster Abbey. Kipling's subsequent reputation has changed with the political and social climate of the age. The contrasting views of him continued for much of the 20th century. George Orwell saw Kipling as "a jingo imperialist", who was "morally insensitive and aesthetically disgusting". Literary critic Douglas Kerr wrote: "[Kipling] is still an author who can inspire passionate disagreement and his place in literary and cultural history is far from settled. But as the age of the European empires recedes, he is recognised as an incomparable, if controversial, interpreter of how empire was experienced. That, and an increasing recognition of his extraordinary narrative gifts, make him a force to be reckoned with." He maintained a written correspondence with the founder of the Builders Of The Adytum (BOTA) western mystery school that began when a seven-year-old Case first began to write Kipling about his paranormal lucid dreams. December 30, 1884: #BOTD: Hideki Tojo, general of the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA), the leader of the Imperial Rule Assistance Association, and the 27th Prime Minister of Japan during much of World War II, from October 17, 1941, to July 22, 1944 (d. December 23, 1948) is #born Tojo Hideki in the Kojimachi district of Tokyo. As Prime Minister, he was responsible for ordering the attack on Pearl Harbor, which initiated war between Japan and the United States, although planning for it had begun in April 1941, before he entered office. Politically, he was fascist, nationalist, and militarist, and was nicknamed " The Razor" for his reputation of having a sharp and legalistic mind capable of quick decision-making. He was a virtual mortal enemy of Isoroku Yamamoto, Japanese Marshal Admiral of the Navy, who despite having planned the Pearl Harbor attack was himself against going to a war with the United States that Tojo actively sought. On July 18, 1944, he resigned as Prime Minister of Japan after the Japanese defeat in Battle Of Saipan and the rest of the numerous setbacks in the war effort. At war's end, he was arrested as a war criminal. On November 12, 1948: in Tokyo, the International Military Tribunal for the Far East, also known as the Tokyo Trials or the Tokyo War Crimes Tribunal, sentenced him and six other Japanese military and government officials to death for their roles in World War II, having committed "Class A" crimes, which were reserved for those who participated in a joint conspiracy to start and wage war. The charges covered a wide range of crimes including prisoner abuse, rape, sexual slavery, torture, ill-treatment of labourers, execution without trial and inhumane medical experiments. On December 23, 1948: his sentence was carried out and he was hanged for war crimes at Sugamo Prison in Tokyo, along with the other six convicted Japanese wartime military leaders, with the sentence carried out by the U.S. 8th Army. December 29-30, 1916: #DOTD: The European Civil War: World War I: The First European War (The European Theater Of World War I): The Eastern Front Of World War I: The Assassination Of Rasputin: -- The so-called Russian "monk" Rasputin (Grigory Yefimovich Novykh) #dies when he is assassinated by a group of conservative Russian noblemen conspirators who had lured him to a private home. There they poisoned Rasputin, beat him at length, and then shot him, all the while playing Irving Berlin's "Alexander's Ragtime Band" (a vulgar allusion to their mutual relationship to Rasputin's lover, Empress Alexandra) on the phonograph; despite all this, he does not die. They finally tie him up and throw him into the freezing Neva River, and at that, he at last was drowned to death. Rasputin was buried on January 2 (December 21 O.S.) at a small church that Vyrubova had been building at Tsarskoye Selo. The funeral was attended only by the imperial family and a few of their intimates. Rasputin's wife, mistress and children were not invited, although his daughters met with the imperial family at Vyrubova's home later that day.The imperial family planned to build a church over Rasputin's grave site. However, his body was exhumed and cremated in the boiler room of Petrograd Polytechnic Institute and his ashes scattered to the winds by a detachment of Red Army soldiers on the orders of Alexander Kerensky, Minister-Chairman of the Russian Provisional Government shortly after Nicholas abdicated the throne in March 1917, so that his grave would not become a rallying point for supporters of the old regime. The memoirs of Anna Vyrubova states regarding Rasputin's death: "As soon as the news became public all St. Petersburg burst into a wild orgy of rejoicing. The 'beast' was slain, the 'evil genius' had disappeared never to return. There was no limit to the wild hysteria of the hour. In the midst of these demonstrations came a telephone message from Protopopov" [Alexander Protopopov, Russian Interior Minister at that time] "asking the Empress's advice as to an immediate burial place for the murdered man. Ultimately the body was be sent to his Siberian village, but in the present circumstances the Minister of the Interior thought a postponement of this advisable. The Empress agreed, and she replied that a temporary interment might be arranged at Tsarskoe Selo. On December 29 (January 12) the coffin, accompanied by a kind-hearted sister of mercy, arrived at Tsarskoe. That same day the Emperor came home from the front, and in the presence of the Imperial Family and myself the briefest of services were held. On the dead man's breast had been laid an ikon from Novgorod, signed on the reverse by the Empress and her daughters as a last token of respect. The coffin was not even buried in consecrated ground, but in a corner of the palace park, and as it was being lowered a few prayers were said by Father Alexander, priest of the Imperial chapel. This is a true account of the burial of Rasputin, about which so many fantastic tales have been embroidered." Rasputin had gained enormous influence with Russian Emperor Nicholas II and the Empress Alexandra, claiming divine inspiration and the ability to perform miracles, especially in helping young Czar Nicky, a hemophiliac. He also urged severe measures in dealing with the peasant masses, measures that largely ang ultimately provoked and ensured the success of The Russian Revolution of 1917, and for a time he virtually dictated government policy. Grigori Rasputin, Russian mystic and self-proclaimed holy man, best-known for having befriended the royal family of Nicholas II, the last Emperor of Russia, through whom he gained considerable influence in the later years of the Russian Empire (b. January 21, 1869) was born Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin to a family of peasants in the Siberian village of Pokrovskoye, located within Tyumensky Uyezd in Tobolsk Governorate (present-day Yarkovsky District in Tyumen Oblast). He had a religious conversion experience after embarking on a pilgrimage to a monastery in 1897, and has been described as a monk or as a strannik (wanderer or pilgrim), though he held no official position in the Russian Orthodox Church. In 1903 or in the winter of 1904-1905, he travelled to Saint Petersburg and captivated a number of religious and social leaders, eventually becoming a prominent figure in Russian society. In November 1905, Rasputin met Nicholas II and his empress consort, Alexandra Feodorovna. In late 1906, he began acting as a faith healer for Nicholas' and Alexandra's only son, Alexei Nikolaevich, who was suffering from haemophilia. He was a divisive figure at court, seen by some Russians as a mystic, visionary, and prophet, and by others as a religious charlatan. The extent of Rasputin's power reached an all-time high in 1915, when Nicholas left Saint Petersburg to oversee the Imperial Russian Army as it was engaged in World War I. In Nicholas' absence, Rasputin and Alexandra consolidated their influence across the Russian Empire. However, as Russian military defeats mounted on the Eastern Front, both figures became increasingly unpopular, and in the early morning of December 30 [O.S. December 17] 1916, Rasputin was assassinated by a group of conservative Russian noblemen who opposed his influence over Alexandra and Nicholas. Historians often suggest that Rasputin's scandalous and sinister reputation helped discredit the Tsarist government, thus precipitating the overthrow of the House of Romanov shortly after his assassination. Accounts of his life and influence were often based on hearsay and rumor; he remains a mysterious, captivating and decidedly d(a)emonic figure in popular culture. December 30, 1928: #BOTD: #HBD! Bo Diddley, African American singer, songwriter, music producer and guitarist (d. June 2, 2008) is #born Ellas Otha Bates in McComb, Mississippi (some sources give his name as Otha Ellas Bates or as Elias Otha Bates). He was the only child of Ethel Wilson, a sharecropper's teenaged daughter, and Eugene Bates, whom he never knew. Wilson was only sixteen, and being unable to support a family, she gave her cousin, Gussie McDaniel, permission to raise her son.McDaniel eventually adopted him, and he assumed her surname, thereby becoming Ellas McDaniel. December 30, 1936: The Aftermath Of World War II: Labor Union Disputes (Trade Union Disputes): Strikes (Strike Actions, Labor Strikes, Labour Strikes): The Flint Sit-Down Strike (The 1936-1937 Flint Sit-Down Strike, The General Motors Sit-Down strike, The Great GM Sit-Down Strike): -- The United Auto Workers (UAW) union stages its first sitdown strike at the General Motors manufacturing plant in Flint, Michigan. The 1936-1937 Flint Sit-Down Strike, also known as the General Motors Sit-Down Strike and the Great GM Sit-Down Strike, changed the UAW from a collection of isolated locals on the fringes of the industry into a major labor union and led to the unionization of the domestic United States automobile industry. A sit-down strike is a labour strike and a form of civil disobedience in which an organized group of workers, usually employed at factories or other centralized locations, take unauthorized (but still legal) or illegal possession of the workplace by "sitting down" at their stations. The attraction of the tactic is that it prevents employers from replacing them with strikebreakers or removing equipment to transfer production to other locations. It is a tactic which emphasizes the importance of workers in the industries in which they are employed, and it allows workers to in effect hold valuable machinery hostage as a bargaining chip. The UAW was founded in May 1935 in Detroit, Michigan under the auspices of the American Federation Of Labor (AFL). The AFL had focused on organizing craft unions and avoiding large factories. But a caucus of industrial unions led by John L. Lewis formed the Committee for Industrial Organization within the AFL at its 1935 convention, creating the original CIO. Within one year, the AFL suspended the unions in the CIO, and these formed the rival Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO), including the UAW. The UAW rapidly found success in organizing with the sit-down strike, first in a General Motors Corporation plant in Atlanta, Georgia in 1936, and more famously in the Flint sit-down strike that began on December 29, 1936. That strike ended in February 1937 after Michigan's governor Frank Murphy played the role of mediator, negotiating recognition of the UAW by General Motors. The next month, auto workers at Chrysler won recognition of the UAW as their representative in a sit-down strike. The UAW's next target was the Ford Motor Company, which had long resisted unionization. Ford manager Harry Bennett used brute force to keep the union out of Ford, and his Ford Service Department was set up as an internal security, intimidation, and espionage unit within the company. It was not reluctant to use violence against union organizers and sympathizers (see The Battle of the Overpass). December 30, 1937: #BOTD: #HBD! Paul Stookey, American singer, songwriter and guitarist of Peter, Paul and Mary, is #born Noel Paul Stookey in Baltimore, Maryland. Though Stookey is known as "Paul" in the folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary, he has been known by his first name, Noel, throughout his life. He continues to work as a singer and an activist, performing as a solo artist, and occasionally performing with Peter Yarrow. His family moved to Birmingham, Michigan, when he was 12 years old, and he graduated from Birmingham High School (now Seaholm High School) in 1955. Stookey is an alumnus of Michigan State University (MSU) in East Lansing, Michigan. While attending MSU, he joined Delta Upsilon fraternity. Though he credits a deep spiritual core for his work, Stookey "dispelled reports that he was born a Buddhist, saying his mother was a Roman Catholic and his dad was an ex-Mormon" and recalling the family's "eclectic attendance at church. I had no real spiritual sense until I was 30.'" Stookey married Elizabeth "Betty" Bannard in 1963 and they have three daughters. After raising their family in Blue Hill, Maine, the couple lived for several years in Massachusetts while Betty served as the Northfield Mount Hermon School chaplain, and in 2005, they returned to Maine. Stookey originally recorded his solo albums in his private studio-a converted chicken coop-on his Maine property. This studio, known as "The Henhouse", was also the origin point of the first broadcasts of WERU upon that station's inception in 1988. Stookey is a born-again Christian. Performing as Paul in the Peter, Paul and Mary trio, he participated in one of the best-known ensembles of the 1960s phase of the American folk music revival, and included some of his solo songs and extended monologues in their performances and recordings. In addition to his recordings with the trio, he released a number of solo works, several albums with the ensemble Bodyworks, and some anthologies. He was an important artist in the young Jesus music movement, which would later bloom into the Christian music industry, although his generally liberal political views distinguish him from many such artists. In 1986, Stookey teamed up with Jim Newton, Paul G. Hill, and Denny Bouchard at Celebration Shop in Texas. The company, now known as Hugworks, uses original musical compositions as music therapy to address the special needs of children. The company has produced three award-winning children's CDs used in hospitals, medical camps and homes across the country. Stookey was awarded the Kate Wolf Memorial Award by the World Folk Music Association in 2000. Paul performed as a member of Peter, Paul and Mary until the death of Mary in September 2009. A classically trained musician, he graduated from New York City's The High School of Music & Art and attended the University of Michigan. He is best known to the public as the bassist and vocalist of the band Mountain, whose song "Mississippi Queen" peaked at #21 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has become a classic rock radio staple. Originating in the eclectic music scene in New York's Greenwich Village, he became closely attached to the British power trio Cream, writing, arranging, and producing for their second album Disraeli Gears. As a producer for Atlantic Records, he worked on several projects with guitarist Leslie West; in 1969 their partnership evolved into the band Mountain. The band lasted less than five years, but their work influenced the first generation of heavy metal and hard rock music. Pappalardi continued to work as a producer, session musician, and songwriter until he was shot and killed by his wife Gail Gail Collins Pappalardi in their East Side Manhattan apartment, with a derringer he had given her as a gift a few months previously. Gail Pappalardi was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and was found guilty of the lesser criminally negligent homicide. He is best known as a member of the band the Monkees, and for starring in the TV series of the same name. His acting credits include a Tony-nominated performance as the Artful Dodger in the original London and Broadway productions of Oliver! as well as a guest star role in a hallmark episode of The Brady Bunch television show and later reprised parody film; Love, American Style; and My Two Dads. Davy Jones died at Martin Memorial South Hospital in Stuart, Florida of a heart attack resulting from arteriosclerosis, aged 66. On March 7, a private funeral service was held at Holy Cross Catholic parish church in Indiantown. To avoid drawing attention to the grieving family, the three surviving Monkees did not attend. Instead, the bandmates attended memorial services in New York City and organized their own private memorial in Los Angeles along with Jones' family and close friends. A public memorial service was held on March 10 in Beavertown, Pennsylvania, near a church Jones had purchased for future renovation. The agreement did not resolve all issues, and the parties continue to meet in an attempt to resolve the issues outstanding. December 30, 2006: #DOTD: Saddam Hussein, Iraqi general and politician, 5th President of Iraq (b. April 28, 1937) #dies when he is executed by hanging. He was buried in the town of his birth, Al-Awja near Tikrit, in an octagonal domed building that he had commissioned in the 80s inside a family plot where his family members including his sons Uday and Qusay were buried. However the tomb was destroyed in the fight between ISIS and the Iraqi State military forces. There is some debate about whether Saddam's body was exhumed before the strikes and taken away elsewhere or it was destroyed along with the tomb. There is no way to confirm this given the chaos that had ensued both before and after the battles. Saddam Hussein Abd al-Majid al-Tikriti was born in Al-Awja, Saladin Governorate, Kingdom of Iraq. was a leading member of the revolutionary Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party, and later, the Baghdad-based Ba'ath Party and its regional organization the Iraqi Ba'ath Party. The Iraqi Ba'ath Party espoused Ba'athism, an Arab nationalist ideology that promotes the development and creation of a unified Arab state through the combination of of a Marxist-Leninist vanguard party leadership and a progressive revolutionary government. Saddam played a key role in the 1968 coup (later referred to as the 17 July Revolution), a bloodless coup led by General Ahmed Hassan Al-Bakr which brought the Iraqi Ba'ath Party to power. As vice president under the ailing General Ahmed Hassan Al-Bakr, and at a time when many groups were considered capable of overthrowing the government, Saddam created security forces through which he tightly controlled conflicts between the government and the armed forces. In the early 1970s, Saddam nationalized oil and foreign banks, a decision that ultimately resulted in the country;s insolvency caused by Iran-Iraq War, the Gulf War, and UN sanctions. Through the 1970s, Saddam cemented his authority over the apparatus of government as oil money helped Iraq's economy to grow at a rapid pace. Positions of power in the country were mostly filled with Sunni Arabs, a minority that made up only a fifth of the population. Saddam formally rose to power in 1979, although he had already been the de facto head of Iraq for several years. He suppressed several movements, particularly Shi'a and Kurdish movements, which sought to overthrow the government or gain independence, and maintained power during the Iran-Iraq War and the Gulf War. Whereas some in the Arab world lauded Saddam for opposing the United States and attacking Israel, he was widely condemned for the brutality of his dictatorship. The total number of Iraqis killed by the security services of Saddam's government in various purges and genocides is conservatively estimated to be 250,000. Saddam's invasions of Iran and Kuwait also resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths. He acquired the title "Butcher of Baghdad". In 2003, a coalition led by the U.S. invaded Iraq to depose Saddam, in which U.S. President George W. Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair falsely accused him of possessing weapons of mass destruction and having ties to al-Qaeda. Saddam's Ba'ath party was disbanded and elections were held. Following his capture on 13 December 2003, the trial of Saddam took place under the Iraqi Interim Government. Bicarbonate of soda is the most used chemical compound because of its many practical and effective uses. Sodium bicarbonate is a white powder-like crystalline that usually appears as a fine powder. When consumed, it tastes salty, one that is likened to alkaline water. The earliest uses of this substance can be traced back to ancient Egypt. In 3000 B.C., ancient Egyptians used a product called "Natron," which mainly consisted of sodium bicarbonate. In 1791, French chemist Nicolas Leblanc made what was known as "soda ash." The most common use of bicarbonate of soda is as a leavening agent, specifically in the preparation of food. This is technically a component that would make a dough or batter rise through a chemical reaction when combined with gas and heat. Before the 1800s, most people would add yeast to their baked goods and desserts to let it grow. The only downside of this is that it was a tedious process and in most cases, the yeast would die at very hot or very cold temperatures. This is how baking soda started being used. Born Richard Charles Rodgers into a prosperous German Jewish family in Arverne, Queens, New York City, he had 43 Broadway musicals and over 900 songs to his credit. He is considered one of the most significant American composers of the 20th century, and his compositions had a significant impact on popular music. He is best known for his songwriting partnerships with the lyricist Lorenz Hart, with whom he wrote several musicals throughout the 1920s and 1930s, including Pal Joey, A Connecticut Yankee, On Your Toes and Babes in Arms; and Oscar Hammerstein II, with whom he wrote musicals through the 1940s and 1950s such as Oklahoma!, Flower Drum Song, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music. His collaborations with Hammerstein, in particular, are celebrated for bringing the Broadway musical to a new maturity by telling stories that were focused around characters and drama rather than the light-hearted entertainment that the genre was known for beforehand. Rodgers was the first person to win all of what are considered the top American entertainment awards in theater, film, recording, and television - a Tony, an Oscar, a Grammy, and an Emmy - now known collectively as an EGOT. In addition, he was awarded a Pulitzer Prize, making him one of only two people to receive all five awards (Marvin Hamlisch is the other). (#JCKaelin here: On a Sunday evening in the summer of 1981, I spent a lovely couple of hours alone with Jack Riley, the lovely multitalented Sandy Duncan, and one of Sandy's "Neverland" cast members, at of all places the now-gone Nedicks hot dog restaurant inside New York City's Penn Station, while Peter Pan, in which Duncan starred in her Tony Award nominated title role, was having its run at Madison Square Garden theater overhead. During the entire two-some hours, with two sole exceptions, nobody else came into that Nedicks, so we basically had the place to ourselves. Sandy was decompressing eating french fries with a young cast member after the evening's performance, thankful that I was letting her be herself and relax; Jack drank coffee after coffee and, as was the way of the world those days, cigarette after cigarette, while I ate my Nedicks favorite: a Nedicks hotdog with cheese and bacon, diet coke, and my own smokes of choice, Camel Filters. Jack and I talked about everything we could think of, and for people like he and I, that's a whole lotta stuff! It was a perfectly natural, warm and happy experience; Jack had no ego, and neither did Sandy, and I was grateful that I could serve as a bit of human companionship without all that "star" stuff weighing on them, and especially I enjoyed that they appreciated my doing that, which made them want me to stay longer. I wished it could just keep going, but when my North Jersey Coast train ride arrived at Penn Station's track 4, it was time for me to go - I knew they wanted me to stay, but it was 11:30 PM, last train, and so, I had to go. We all said fond farewells, and to my surprise, they each took down my name and address (I didn't have a phone then, living as I did in a rooming house at the time) before I left - and don't you know, ever since it seems I've had at least one guardian angel looking after me in one way or another :) . August 19, 2016) is #born John Albert Riley Jr in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Agnes C. Riley (nee Corrigan) and John Albert Riley. After attending Saint Ignatius High School and John Carroll University, he served in the U.S. Army. After being discharged, Riley became a popular radio personality in Cleveland, along with his radio partner and "straight man" Jeff Baxter; The Baxter & Riley Show on WERE (1300 AM) featured not only music but comedy sketches and a slew of offbeat characters that Riley and Baxter voiced. Riley gave up the radio show in the mid-1960s and moved to Los Angeles, where his Cleveland friend Tim Conway helped him obtain work writing comedy sketches, which later led to acting opportunities. First a semi-regular in the cast of the 1960s sitcom Occasional Wife, a short-lived show on NBC in which he played Wally Frick, Riley was perhaps most famous for playing Elliot Carlin, the neurotic, sour, and selfish patient on The Bob Newhart Show 1972-1978. In 1973, he was cast as Gomez Addams in The Addams Family Fun-House, then in 1979, he starred in ABC's holiday telefilm The Halloween That Almost Wasn't (a.k.a. The Night Dracula Saved The World) as Warren the Werewolf (Wolf Man) of Budapest. Riley then, in 1980, appeared in a comedy special for HBO called The Wild Wacky Wonderful World of Winter. He was a regular cast member in The Tim Conway Show, a comedy-variety show that aired on CBS from March 1980 through late summer 1981, acting in sketch comedy in each episode. In 1985, he reprised his Bob Newhart Show role of Elliot Carlin on St. Elsewhere, and did so again in a 1987 episode of ALF. December 30, 1947: #DOTD: Han van Meegeren, Dutch painter and portraitist who became a national hero after World War II when it was revealed that he had sold a forged painting purporting to be by Vermeer to Reichsmarschall Hermann Goering during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, considered one of the most ingenious art forgers of the 20th century (b. 10 October 1889) #dies at 5:00 pm at Valeriuskliniek hospital in Amsterdam, Netherlands aged 58 following two heart attacks suffered while waiting to be moved to prison. Soon after his death, a plaster death mask was made, which was acquired by the Rijksmuseum in 2014. His family and several hundred of his friends attended his funeral at the Driehuis Westerveld Crematorium chapel. In 1948, his urn was buried in the general cemetery in the village of Diepenveen, a municipality of Deventer. Overijssel. Eastern Netherlands. Han van Meegeren was born Henricus Antonius van Meegeren in Deventer, Netherlands. Van Meegeren attempted to make an honest career as an artist, but art critics dismissed his work as too influenced by the Dutch Golden Age style of painting. He decided to prove his talent and to obtain revenge against critics he despised by forging Dutch Golden Age paintings that leading experts of the time accepted as genuine 17th-century works, including leading critic Dr Abraham Bredius, who had been the critic most dismissive of van Meegeren's legitimate work. The forged Vermeer Goering purchased by van Meegeren became one of his most prized possessions. Following the war, Van Meegeren was arrested on a charge of selling cultural property to the Nazis. Facing a possible death penalty, Van Meegeren confessed the painting was a forgery. He was convicted on November 12, 1947, and sentenced to one year in prison; however; he died on six weeks later. December 30, 1929: The American Civil Rights Movement: Anti-Black Racism In The United States: Discrimination: The Great Depression: The Great Depression In The United States: Consumer Activism: African American Consumer Activism in the 1930s: The Don't Buy Where You Can't Work Campaign (Don't Spend Your Money Where You Can't Work, Jobs For Negroes): -- The "Don't Buy Where You Can't Work" campaign begins in the South Side Of Chicago with the picketing of chain stores in the opening months of The Great Depression, in response to a call to do so by the Chicago newspaper the Whip, under editor Joseph Bibb, to boycott Chicago stores that refused to hire blacks. Supported by the Reverend J. C. Austin of the Pilgrim Baptist Church, the program resulted in the hiring of more than two thousand blacks, mostly as clerks in Chicago department stores. This campaign spread to New York, Cleveland, Los Angeles and other cities, and continued throughout the Depression. African American grassroots consumer activism in the 1930s focused primarily on securing their rights as consumers rather than with issues of consumer protection. Historically, African Americans have been excluded from opportunities to work white-collar jobs, instead finding themselves both sustained and exploited in domestic service and farming roles. Kelly Miller, a Howard University sociologist, referred to African Americans as "the surplus man, the last to be hired and the first to be hired". The Great Depression exacerbated these economic vulnerabilities, and by 1933 nearly two million African Americans were out of work nationwide. In response, African American consumers put economic pressure on local white owned businesses by choosing to shop at African American owned businesses, thus using familiar boycott tactics on a mass scale across major northern cities. The "Don't Buy Where You Can't Work" campaign turned the racial segregation of urban communities into an opportunity to economically support African American capitalists while simultaneously protesting the continued exploitation of African American labor by white employers. The campaign was considered successful in ushering an increase of African American employment rates, opportunities for advancement and promotion, and a strengthening of purchasing power. December 30, 1934: #BOTD: #HBD! Del Shannon, American singer-songwriter and guitarist of rock and roll and country music best known for his 1961 number 1 Billboard hit "Runaway" (d. February 8, 1990) is #born Charles Weedon Westover in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Bert and Leone Mosher Westover, and grew up in nearby Coopersville. He learned to play the ukulele and guitar and listened to country-and-western music, by artists such as Hank Williams, Hank Snow, and Lefty Frizzell. He was drafted into the Army in 1954, and while in Germany played guitar in a band called "The Cool Flames". When his service ended, he returned to Battle Creek, Michigan. He found part-time work as a rhythm guitarist in the singer Doug DeMott's group, "The Moonlight Ramblers", working at the Hi-Lo Club. When DeMott was fired in 1958 for drunkenness, Westover took over as leader and singer, giving himself the name Charlie Johnson and renaming the band the Big Little Show Band. In early 1959 he added the keyboardist Max Crook, who played the Musitron (his own invention, an early synthesizer). Crook had made recordings, and he persuaded Ann Arbor disc jockey Ollie McLaughlin to listen to the band. McLaughlin took the group's demos to Harry Balk and Irving Micahnik of Talent Artists in Detroit. In July 1960, Westover and Crook signed to become recording artists and composers for Bigtop Records. Balk suggested Westover use a new name, and they came up with "Del Shannon", combining Mark Shannon - a wrestling pseudonym used by a regular at the Hi-Lo Club - with Del, derived from the Cadillac Coupe de Ville, his favorite car. He flew to New York City, but his first sessions were not successful. McLaughlin then persuaded Shannon and Crook to rewrite and re-record one of their earlier songs, originally called "Little Runaway", using the Musitron as lead instrument. On January 21, 1961, they recorded "Runaway", which was released as a single in February 1961, reaching number 1 on the Billboard chart in April. Shannon followed with "Hats Off to Larry", which peaked at number 5 on the Billboard chart and number 2 on the Cashbox chart in 1961, and the less popular "So Long, Baby", another song of breakup bitterness. "Runaway" and "Hats Off to Larry" were recorded in a day. "Little Town Flirt", in 1962 (with Bob Babbitt), reached number 12 in 1963, as did the album of the same title. After these hits, Shannon was unable to keep his momentum in the U.S. but had continued success in the United Kingdom, where he had always been more popular. In 1963, he became the first American to record a cover version of a song by the Beatles: his version of "From Me to You" charted in the U.S. before the Beatles' version. Shannon opened for Ike and Tina Turner at Dave Hull's Hullabaloo club in Los Angeles, California, on December 22, 1965. Shannon signed with Liberty Records in 1966 and revived Toni Fisher's "The Big Hurt" and the Rolling Stones' "Under My Thumb". Peter and Gordon released his song "I Go to Pieces" in 1965. In the late 1960s, not having charted for several years, Shannon turned to production. During Shannon's tenure at Liberty Records, success on a national scale eluded him, but he did have several regional U.S. chart hits with "The Big Hurt", "Under My Thumb", "She", "Led Along" and "Runaway" (1967 version). That version (recorded in England and produced by Rolling Stones producer Andrew Loog Oldham) also did well on the Canadian and Australian pop charts. In early 1967 Shannon recorded the album Home and Away in England, with Oldham at the helm. Intended by Oldham as the British answer to Pet Sounds, Home and Away was shelved by Liberty Records, although a handful of singles were issued. It was not until 1978 that all of the tracks were eventually issued (with three unrelated tracks) on a British album, And the Music Plays On. In 1991, all of the tracks were released in the United States as part of the CD Del Shannon; The Liberty Years. In 2006, 39 years after it was recorded, Home and Away was finally released as a stand-alone collection by EMI Records in the UK. This CD collected the 11 original tracks in stereo and five singles (released in the U.S., the UK and the Philippines) in their original monaural mixes. In September 1967, Shannon began laying down the tracks for The Further Adventures of Charles Westover, which was highly regarded by fans and critics alike, despite disappointing sales. The album yielded two 1968 singles, "Thinkin' It Over" and "Gemini" (recently the subject of a Pilooski remix). In October 1968, Liberty Records released their tenth (in the United States) and final Shannon single, a cover of Dee Clark's 1961 hit "Raindrops". This brought to a close a commercially disappointing period in Shannon's career. In 1972, he signed with United Artists and recorded Live In England, released in June 1973. Reviewer Chris Martin critiqued the album favourably, saying that Shannon never improvised, was always true to the original sounds of his music and that only Lou Christie rivaled his falsetto. In April 1975, he signed with Island Records. After he and his manager jointly sought back royalties for Shannon, Bug Music was founded in 1975 to administer his songs. Shannon's career slowed greatly in the 1970s, owing in part to his alcoholism. The Welsh rock singer Dave Edmunds produced the single "And the Music Plays On" in 1974. In 1978 Shannon stopped drinking and began work on "Sea of Love", released in 1982 on his album Drop Down and Get Me, produced by Tom Petty. The album took two years to record and featured Petty's band, the Heartbreakers, backing Shannon. However, RSO Records, to which Shannon was signed, folded. Further work on the LP was done for Network Records (distributed by Elektra Records). Seven songs are Shannon originals with covers of songs recorded by the Everly Brothers, the Rolling Stones, and Frankie Ford, along with "Sea of Love" by Phil Phillips. It was Shannon's first album in eight years. In February 1982, Shannon appeared at the Bottom Line. He performed pop-rock tunes and old hits. In 1986 he had a top-ten hit as a songwriter when the pop-country singer Juice Newton released her cover of Shannon's "Cheap Love" as a single, which reached number 9 on the Billboard Hot Country chart. In 1986, Luis Cardenas, the drummer for the band Renegade, made his version of Shannon's hit "Runaway". The video for the song featured stop-animation dinosaurs, in which Shannon made a cameo appearance as a police officer. Shannon had a resurgence of popularity after re-recording "Runaway" with new lyrics as the theme for the NBC-TV program Crime Story. In 1988, Shannon sang "The World We Know" with the Smithereens on their album Green Thoughts. Two years later, he recorded with Jeff Lynne of the Electric Light Orchestra, and there were rumors he would join the Traveling Wilburys after the death of Roy Orbison. Previously, in 1975, Shannon had recorded tracks with Lynne, along with "In My Arms Again", a country song he wrote and recorded for Warner Brothers, which had signed Shannon in 1984. Shannon was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999. Del Shannon was inducted into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame in 2005. Del Shannon died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound from a .22 calibre rifle at his home in Santa Clarita, California. In the years leading up to his death, Shannon suffered from depression. Shannon was cremated, and his ashes were scattered. Following his death, the Traveling Wilburys honored him by recording a version of "Runaway". Jeff Lynne also co-produced Shannon's posthumous album, Rock On, released by Silvertone Records in 1991. A Del Shannon Memorial Scholarship Fund was set up following Shannon's death. May 8, 1922 (or as late as 1930)) #dies in mysterious circumstances; he was still a world-ranked boxer when he died in mysterious circumstances in 1970; found decomposing after his wife returned to their Las Vegas home after a two week trip, the official cause of death was given as lung congestion and heart failure caused by a heroin overdose administered six days prior, but as he was deathly afraid of needles, murder theories were advanced involving his employment as the muscle of a loan shark ring, and being involved with drug dealers who thought he was a police informant. Underworld connections and his unrecorded dates of birth and death added to the enigma; Liston signed a contract in September 1953 proclaiming "Whatever you tell me to do, I'll do" to his (only) financial backers who were all close to underworld figures, and Liston supplemented his income by working for racketeers as an intimidator-enforcer. The connections to organized crime were an advantage early in his career but were later used against him. There is no official record of Liston's birth, as Arkansas did not make birth certificates mandatory until 1965, and no Charles (or Sonny) Liston can be found in the 1930 census, but in the 1940 census, he was listed as 10 years old. According to his publicist, he had been "in ill health for some time, but I don't know the specific cause of death." Shaw had been diabetic since the 1980s. Widely regarded as "one of jazz's finest clarinetists," Shaw led one of the United States' most popular big bands in the late 1930s through the early 1940s. Though he had numerous hit records, he was perhaps best known for his 1938 recording of Cole Porter's "Begin the Beguine." Prior to the release of "Beguine," Shaw and his fledgling band had languished in relative obscurity for over two years and, after its release, he became a major pop artist within short order. The record eventually became one of the era's defining recordings. Musically restless, Shaw was also an early proponent of what became known much later as Third Stream music, which blended elements of classical and jazz forms and traditions. His music influenced other musicians, such as John Barry in England, with the vamp of the James Bond Theme, possibly influenced by "Nightmare," which also has a similar vamp to Kurt Weill's "Lonely House." Shaw also recorded with small jazz groups drawn from within the ranks of the various big bands he led. In addition to hiring Buddy Rich, he signed Billie Holiday as his band's vocalist in 1938, becoming the first white band leader to hire a full-time black female singer to tour the segregated Southern U.S. However, after recording "Any Old Time," Holiday left the band due to hostility from audiences in the South, as well as from music company executives who wanted a more "mainstream" singer. Shaw's band became enormously successful, and his playing was eventually recognized as equal to that of Benny Goodman. Longtime Duke Ellington clarinetist Barney Bigard cited Shaw as his favorite clarinet player. In response to Goodman's nickname, the "King of Swing," Shaw's fans dubbed him the "King of the Clarinet." Shaw felt the titles should be reversed. "Benny Goodman played clarinet. I played music," he said. In 1938, Down Beat magazine readers voted Artie Shaw's the best swing band. He served in the US Navy from 1942 to 1944, (during which time he led a morale-building band that toured the South Pacific amidst the chaos of World War II) and, following his discharge in 1944, he returned to lead a band through 1945. Following the breakup of that band, he began to focus on other interests and gradually withdrew from the world of being a professional musician and major celebrity, although he remained a force in popular music and jazz before retiring from music completely in 1954. Shaw credited his time in the Navy from 1942 to 1944 as a period of renewed introspection.[5] After his discharge, he entered psychoanalysis and began to gradually withdraw from music to pursue a writing career. His autobiography, The Trouble With Cinderella: An Outline of Identity, was published in 1952 (with later reprint editions in 1992 and 2001). Revealing downbeat elements of the music business, Shaw explained that "the trouble with Cinderella" is "nobody ever lives happily ever after." He turned to semi-autobiographical fiction with the three short novels in I Love You, I Hate You, Drop Dead! (1965, reprinted in 1997), which prompted Terry Southern's comment: "Here is a deeply probing examination of the American marital scene. I flipped over it!". Shaw's short stories, including "Snow White in Harlem," were collected in The Best of Intentions and Other Stories (1989). September 13, 81 AD) is #born Titus Caesar Vespasianus in Rome. Titus became the Roman Emperor upon the death of his father, Vespasian, and ruled from 79 to 81. A member of the Flavian dynasty, Titus succeeded his father Vespasian upon his death. Before becoming emperor, Titus gained renown as a military commander, serving under his father in Judea during the First Jewish-Roman War. The campaign came to a brief halt with the death of emperor Nero in 68, launching Vespasian's bid for the imperial power during the Year of the Four Emperors. When Vespasian was declared Emperor on 1 July 69, Titus was left in charge of ending the Jewish rebellion. In 70, he besieged and captured Jerusalem, and destroyed the city and the Second Temple. For this achievement Titus was awarded a triumph; the Arch of Titus commemorates his victory to this day. During his father's rule, Titus gained notoriety in Rome serving as prefect of the Praetorian Guard, and for carrying on a controversial relationship with the Jewish queen Berenice. Despite concerns over his character, Titus ruled to great acclaim following the death of Vespasian in 79, and was considered a good emperor by Suetonius and other contemporary historians. As emperor, Titus is best known for completing the Colosseum and for his generosity in relieving the suffering caused by two disasters, the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 and a fire in Rome in 80. His burial details are not publicly disclosed. Joaquin Alberto Vargas y Chavez was a noted painter of pin-up girls. He is often considered one of the most famous of the pin-up artists. Numerous Vargas paintings have sold and continue to sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Born Joaquin Alberto Vargas y Chavez in Arequipa, Peru, he was the son of noted Peruvian photographer Max T. Vargas. Alberto Vargas moved to the United States in 1916 after studying art in Europe, Zurich, and Geneva prior to World War I. While he was in Europe he came upon the French magazine La Vie Parisienne, with a cover by Raphael Kirchner, which he said was a great influence on his work.His early career in New York included work as an artist for the Ziegfeld Follies and for many Hollywood studios. Ziegfeld hung his painting of Olive Thomas at the theater, and she was thought of as one of the earliest Vargas Girls. Vargas' most famous piece of film work was for the poster of the 1933 film The Sin of Nora Moran, which shows a near-naked Zita Johann in a pose of desperation. The poster is frequently named one of the greatest movie posters ever made. He became widely noted in the 1940s as the creator of iconic World War-II era pin-ups for Esquire magazine known as "Vargas Girls." Between 1940 and 1946 Vargas produced 180 paintings for the magazine. The nose art of many American and Allied World War II aircraft was inspired and adapted from these Esquire pin-ups, as well as those of George Petty, and other artists. In 2004, Hugh Hefner, the founder and Editor-in-Chief of Playboy, who had previously worked for Esquire, wrote: "The US Post Office attempted to put Esquire out of business in the 1940s by taking away its second-class mailing permit. The Feds objected, most especially, to the cartoons and the pin-up art of Alberto Vargas. Esquire prevailed in the case that went to the Supreme Court, but the magazine dropped the cartoons just to be on the safe side". A legal dispute with Esquire over the use of the name "Varga" resulted in a judgement against Vargas. He struggled financially until 1959 when Playboy magazine began to use his work. Over the next 16 years he produced 152 paintings for the magazine. His career flourished and he had major exhibitions of his work all over the world. Vargas' artistic work, paintings and color drawings, were periodically featured in some issues of Playboy magazine in the 1960s and 1970s. The death of his wife Anna Mae in 1974 left him devastated, and he stopped painting. Anna Mae had been his model and business manager, his muse in every way. The publication of his autobiography in 1978 renewed interest in his work and brought him partially out of his self-imposed retirement to do a few works, such as album covers for The Cars (Candy-O, 1979) and Bernadette Peters (Bernardette Peters, 1980; Now Playing, 1981). Many of Vargas' works from his period with Esquire are now held by the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas. It was given those works in 1980 along with a large body of other art from the magazine. At the December 2003 Christie's auction of Playboy archives, the 1967 Vargas painting Trick or Treat sold for 71,600 USD. His work was typically a combination of watercolor and airbrush. His mastery of the airbrush is acknowledged by the founding of the Vargas Award, awarded annually by Airbrush Action Magazine, which was named after him. Despite always using figure models, he often portrayed elegantly dressed, semi-nude to nude women of idealized proportions. Vargas' artistic trait would be slender fingers and toes, with nails often painted red. Vargas is widely regarded as one of the finest artists in his genre. Her burial details are not publicly discosed. Lillian Yonally was born in Lynn, Massachusetts. The eldest of two daughters, she lived with her father and grandparents in New Bedford, Massachusetts until age 14. Her summers were spent at the beach with her mother and younger sister in Halifax, Canada. Boating, sailing, and swimming were favorite activities, but Lillian's eyes turned skyward after she had the chance to sit up front at the controls of an airplane that her aunt and uncle were piloting to New York. At age 15, she began to learn how to fly in Piper Cubs at an airport in Rochester, Massachusetts. After four years of boarding school, Lillian moved to New York City where she attended the Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School while taking flying lessons on Long Island. She earned her private pilot's license at Roosevelt Field in September 1941. After graduating from Katharine Gibbs, Lillian worked briefly for Pan Am and then Grumman Aviation Engineering in Bethpage. During this time, Lillian worked as an air control operator at Grumman, sometimes assisting Charles Lindbergh, amongst others, who flew in and out of the field there. Before the outbreak of the war, and with tensions growing over the involvement of the United States in the worldwide conflict, Lillian continued flying. She applied to the U.S. Army Air Corps for a new program being developed that sought to recruit and train civilian female pilots to fly military aircraft for the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF). The program was implemented so that women could relieve male pilots from stateside flying duties, hence freeing men for overseas combat operations. Started as a civilian unit after the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, the program was begun in a time of emergency with the intent to militarize the woman's unit at a later time. Regardless, Lillian wanted to fly for her country and shortly after her 21st birthday, with the minimum of 35 hours required to join the program at that time, she received a telegram accepting her into the Women's Flight Training Detachment (later known as the WASP, or Women Airforce Service Pilots). Prior to reporting to Avenger Field in Sweetwater, Texas for training, Lillian borrowed money from her boss, completed her physical at Mitchel Field, L.I. and flew to Ft. Worth, TX where she boarded a train to Sweetwater. During her training at Avenger Field, Lillian attended ground school, flew primary, basic and advanced trainers and followed all of the program's rigorous military protocols. Advancing through all three phases of training, Lillian graduated with Class 43-7, the seventh class of 1943. Aware of the dangers involved in flying military aircraft, Lillian put fear behind her and focused on completing the program. "I was not afraid and did not waste time on worrying. Life is to be lived!" said Lillian. After graduation, WASP Yonally was assigned to be one of 20 women trained to fly the Mitchell B-25 medium bomber at Mather Field in Sacramento. "I never dreamed I would be flying a bomber, but I loved it. It was a great airplane_fun to fly_ and it made the most glorious racket! she exclaimed. When one of her fellow classmates dropped out of the B-25 program to get married, Lillian thought it was an unwise choice_. saying, "You can always get married, but you can't always fly a B-25!" Graduating from Mather, Lillian achieved her instrument and commercial ratings and from there she was assigned to the training command at March Field in Riverside, California where she towed targets over the Mojave. Here, ground troops fired live ammunition at fabric sleeves that trailed some 30 feet behind her plane, as Lillian strafed the troops below. She also flew nighttime searchlight missions in the SBD Dauntless. After the WASPs were suddenly disbanded in December 1944, Lillian was sent to Hamilton Field where she caught a ride in a B-24 part of the way home, returning to the East Coast on Christmas Eve. After the WASP, she worked for Sperry Gyroscope in Mineola and lived in neighboring Garden City on Long Island. There, she owned an airplane with three other pilots, which she would fly every fourth weekend via Montauk Point to visit her family in New Bedford, near Cape Cod. Eventually, Lillian sold her share of the airplane and in 1946 she married Jim Yonally, who she had met earlier in California while towing targets. While raising her six children in the 1950s and 60s, Lillian rarely spoke of her service with the WASP, but in the 1970s, when the government announced that they would be training the first American women to fly military aircraft, she began to open up. Working for the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Lillian helped in the hard-fought effort to grant the WASP retroactive military status, which they were finally awarded in 1977. "I was proud to be part of the WASP. You do something like this, and it does change your life. It gives you a feeling of independence and capability. Nothing has ever slowed me down. I drive right through. It's part of that 'You can do it!' business." Three decades later, in March 2010, Lillian and family attended the ceremony in Washington D.C. awarding the Women Airforce Service Pilots of World War II the Congressional Gold Medal. In later years, she loved her visits to Manhattan to see the Rockettes with her grandkids and daughter. "I love New York City. I have the same feel for it as when I was 18!" she exclaimed. Dawn Wells was born Dawn Elberta Wells in Reno, Nevada. She became known for her role as Mary Ann Summers on the CBS sitcom Gilligan's Island. Wells was born to Evelyn (nee Steinbrenner) and Joe Wesley Wells in Reno, Nevada, where she attended and graduated from Reno High School. Her father owned a local Reno construction company called "Wells Cargo" (not to be confused with the trailer manufacturer). After high school graduation, Wells attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, where she majored in chemistry. She transferred to the University of Washington in Seattle, where she graduated in 1960 with a degree in theater arts and design. She was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. In 1959, Wells was crowned Miss Nevada and represented her state in the Miss America 1960 pageant in Atlantic City, New Jersey. In Hollywood, Wells made her debut on The Roaring 20's and the movie The New Interns and was cast in episodes of such television series as The Joey Bishop Show, 77 Sunset Strip with Efrem Zimbalist Jr., Cheyenne with Clint Walker, Maverick with Jack Kelly, and Bonanza with Lorne Greene and Dan Blocker. A recurring theme, in the form of a rivalry, developed from the show that posed the question, mainly to men, as to which one of the female stars they preferred: Ginger or Mary Ann? Wells embraced the good-natured rivalry. During a 2014 interview with the Vancouver Sun, Wells said that she had a t-shirt that read: "Ginger or Mary Ann, the ultimate dilemma." The question of which of these two characters men prefer endured long after the end of the series. "You can go anywhere and say 'Ginger or Mary Ann?' You don't have to say what show it is. Everybody gets it. And I always win." Wells had small roles in the early-1960s films Palm Springs Weekend and The New Interns, and later starred with Michael Dante in the independent 1975 film Winterhawk, playing a Western settler kidnapped by a Native American chief. In fall 2011, she began filming Silent but Deadly (originally titled Hotel Arthritis), a comedy horror film released in 2012. Following Gilligan's Island, Wells embarked on a theater career, appearing in nearly 100 theatrical productions as of July 2009. She spent the majority of the 1970s and 1980s touring in theater productions, notably the second national (bus and truck) tour of Neil Simon's Chapter Two (in the role of Jennie Malone), and replacing Lorna Luft as Sonia Walsk in the second national tour of They're Playing Our Song. She also had a one-woman show at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas in 1985. In May 2016, Wells was named marketing ambassador to MeTV Network, which had begun airing reruns of Gilligan's Island. For several years, Wells operated a business, Wishing Wells Collections, making clothing for people with limited mobility. She was the founder of the Idaho Film and Television Institute, a not-for-profit, educational organization with "a vision of education, technical training and economic development in Southeastern Idaho.". Wells organized and founded SpudFest, an annual family film and festival in Driggs, Idaho, which was sponsored by Idaho Potatoes. SpudFest held festivals from 2004 to 2008, and showcased film premieres, and included in-person festival appearances by classic TV icons, including Barbara Eden of I Dream of Jeannie and actor Lou Ferrigno, who portrayed The Incredible Hulk. Wells also lent her support to the Denver Foundation, a West Virginia charity chaired by Dreama Denver, widow of Wells' Gilligan's Island co-star Bob Denver. In November 2009, she appeared at the Denver Foundation's Christmas Wish Celebrity Auction, helping to raise funds for the disabled and disadvantaged in West Virginia. Wells married Larry Rosen, a talent agent, on October 27, 1962. The couple had no children, and divorced in 1967. In 2018, a GoFundMe page was set up to help Wells cope with financial trouble from medical care after a fall. September 25, 1929) #dies in the evening surrounded by friends and family at her home in Manhattan, New York City at age 93. The cause of her death was reported as natural causes; she had been suffering from dementia in her later years, and the most common cause of death in a person afflicted by dementia is heart failure. She is buried next to members of her family at Lakeside Memorial Park cemetary in Miami, Florida. Walters' gravesite is denoted with a small black and gold marker in a narrow marble frame, with her name, years of birth and death, and her last words at the bottom: "No regrets - I had a great life." Barbara Walters was born Barbara Jill Walters in Boston to Jewish parents Dena (nee Seletsky) and Louis "Lou" Walters (born Louis Abraham Warmwater). Respected for her interviewing ability and popularity with viewers, Walters appeared as the host of numerous television programs, including Today, The View, 20/20, and the ABC Evening News.
